August is basically Christmas around espy as the boxes of fall merchandise start creeping into the store and we start writing our wishlists of sweaters, scarves, jackets and new denim washes. And although we are hoping for more summer weather, we are also looking ahead to make sure you know what to wear when all of sudden the leaves are orange!
So here you have it – the 2013 Fall Trend Report for the ladies, straight from the racks of espy:
1. Foxy Lady
With a lot French girl flair, Amelia models a skater skirt, a carry over trend from Spring/Summer ’13. Skater skirts are perfect for those of us with smaller waists and bigger hips and thighs. The flared skirt skims your curves without hugging them, making your waist the center of attention. The look is Autumnized by using rich cranberry as the color of choice in the basic long sleeve, fitted top. When wearing a skater skirt, keep proportions in mind by wearing something fitted on top. The statement piece of the outfit is obviously the fox print scarf. The matchy-matchy feel of the scarf and the top gives this playful look a touch of sophistication. And the thigh high black boots add just the right amount of sexy to an otherwise very innocent look.
2. Dreamy, Creamy Winter White
Break out your best knits, but don’t put away those white jeans from summer just yet! Two of the biggest trends from the runways are American classics, such as knits and tweed, and winter white on white. In this look, we combined an ultra chunky knit sweater dripping in Polo Collection style with white denim. We added camel colored layers, like the BB Dakota pleather jacket and cheetah print scarf to keep the outfit creamy, soft and appropriate for fall temperatures!
espy fashion tip: Match your lipstick to your mittens to creatively pull your look together.
3. Unicorns and Leather
Once again, we see the influence of youthful prints from the Fall/Winter ’13 runway in this fitted Yumi tunic, which happens to be covered in unicorns! This tunic has a great shape because it is fitted enough that its length won’t devour you. And because it is so fitted, its super easy to layer it with fun pieces. You can add some edge to this cutesy print with strong leather pieces, gray or distressed denim and black boots. Or add a fur vest, layered necklaces, and stacked bracelets if you’re a girl who isn’t afraid of accessorizing.
The biggest color of the season is GREEN! We suggest adding a green piece in a basic silhouette to your wardrobe. For example, a green pencil skirt is not only striking, but practical. In the above look, we have paired the green skirt with a patterned blouse, a patterned oversized cardigan and printed shoes. A solid colored skirt means you can play with pattern mixing like we did above. Remember to keep one pattern bold (in our look, that would be the blouse) and the other patterns more subdued. Finish off this look with simple accessories like a chain of pearls and a braided belt. These will help anchor the outfit and keep the patterns from competing with each other.
5. Burgundy Beauty
In this look, Amelia wears the new Fidelity Ace in Venetian Brocade, showing how patterned jeans will be carried over into the fall in rich, sophisticated prints that are much more subtle than the bright florals we saw in Spring. We’ve paired the sage green print with an oversized, menswear inspired burgundy blouse. The look is finished perfectly with wine stained lips and layered necklaces.
6. 1940s Inspired
The 1940s will definitely be called upon for inspiration this fall! We are loving the luxe accessories, like the fur collar worn in the photo, and the emphasis on that ever-so desirable hourglass silhouette, achieved through shapes as classic as the movie stars of the 40s. To achieve a 1940s inpsired look, we have used a classic print, the polka dot, in a classic shape – the pencil skirt. We have nipped in the waist with a skinny belt and dropped the neckline ever so slightly to get that film noir sex appeal in order!
7. Mohair Moment
Who isn’t excited about the CRAZY colored furs on the runways?! Okay – so you might not be ready to wear a jacket that looks like it came from the costume department of Sesame Street, but you should definitely try the trend in something a tad more wearable. This mohair sweater from Yumi is so on trend, it hurts! It is bright and obviously pulls from the runways, but it also sticks to a familiar fall sweater shape with it’s over-sized intention and the cozy feel of the mohair. Keep your accessories to a minimum when wearing a sweater like this – stick to your best jeans and your best boots, and a pop of color on your lips. Simple but bold.
8. Cute Critters
As we’ve already mentioned – youthful prints are majorly influencing all our fav brands! The cute critters graphically covering this sheer blouse are almost stealing show…however, adding in a pair of skinny black jeans and tall black boots toughen up the look so much so that all you see is a gorgeous blouse that would be an amazing addition to your wardrobe because…well… it’s just so darn special!
9. Gray Scale
Everyone loves a good neutral! This season, have fun with your grays, browns, navys, camels, and creams by layering them up and mixing patterns. Neutrals are great go-to pieces to have in your closet because they are so easy to wear. You will feel ultra-chic in a layered neutral look like the one above because let’s face it – we all feel good and look good in fail safe neutrals.
10. Blue Bird
When it comes down to it, fall really is about jeans, boots, scarves and jackets. So why not have a little fun with your fall basics?! Try a jean with slightly more distressing for an added layer of texture in your outfits. Find an infinity scarf that speaks to you. And wear jackets that, above all else, FIT!
