Conscious Groove Fashion Show

espy was happy to participate in Conscious Groove – a fundraiser for the Alberta Children’s Hospital – on Thursday, April 18. espy teamed up with our favorite local designer, Aleem Arif of Bano eeMee, to put on a super cute spring fashion show featuring Aleem’s leathers and espy’s clothes. It was a great night to support the Alberta Children’s Hospital through fashion and art. And also a fun opportunity to show how espy likes to style Bano eeMee.

New Spring Styles

Although Spring has only peaked out a couple times – it has fully sprung inside espy! Check out some of our newest favs in store as of this week:

charlotte Black dress

You might find a couple of the espy staff members sporting this new, very sexy, slinky black dress! We all love the length because it gives a bit of the maxi feel, but shows off enough leg that it steers away from boho. Here it’s been styled with a great collar necklace and chunky waist belt. Dress: RD Style, $43. Necklace: $23, Belt: $28.

Charlotte Bomber

One huge trend for S/S ’13 is the bomber jacket. This new Desigual bomber is a perfect layering piece in a great color with a cool print. There are so many ways to style a bomber, but we love pairing this feminine print with a bold, graphic tee and super distressed skinnies. Bomber: Desigual, $229, Tee: Oxmo, $39, Jeans: GSUS, $189.

Charlotte Desigual top

There is something about this Desigual top that reminds me of the Salsa! Tucked into high-waisted pants and a bright skinny belt – this is exactly what I want to wear to the patios this summer. Top: Desigual, $127, Jeans: Fidelity Belvedere, $219, Belt: $29.

Charlotte Maxi skirt

With quite a few shorties on staff, the espy girls love to wear maxi skirts instead of full maxi dresses. Tucking in a pretty tank and defining your waist will add some length to your body and won’t drown you in too much of one color or one print. Maxi skirt: Kersh, $59, Tank: Mia Melon, $69, Belt: $29.

Charlotte printed pants

Here’s a super cute way to wear black differently! This new black blouse has adorable details like a sparkly neckline and layers of light grey and pastel yellow chiffon. Top: RD Style, $39, Pants: RD Style, $59.

Charlotte Desigual Dress

Who needs accessories in a dress like this?! So many great patterns in classic colors! Dress: Desigual, $137, Shoes: Desigual, $83.

What happens in Vegas…

What happens in Vegas doesn’t always stay in Vegas – but in espy’s case, that’s always a good thing!

Each year, twice a year, a few of us here at espy head to Las Vegas for one of the biggest retailer tradeshows in the world to accomplish some very serious work – BUYING for the store. This year it took 3 of us to man the major tradeshow floors to find the latest upcoming styles to hit espy over the next few months.

So…what did we find? Here’s a little recap of the trends we saw, we loved, we bought, and we were inspired by:

Spring 2013 styles for the Ladies (coming to the store soon!)

We’ve got our How to Wear Spring 2013 Trends blog on it’s way, but here is a sneak peak at what we’re digging for all our espy fans as the weather warms up, the parkas are put away, and our toes are squirming out of our socks for flip flops and wedges.

Most fashionistas die for Fall – but personally – Spring is my ultimate fav season. So I can’t help but list some of the best trends you will see over the next few months at espy:

  • Dots and Checks:

The Spread Love Party!

Love is certainly in the air at espy.

Last weekend, espy kicked off Spread Love Month with a little Saturday evening soiree to celebrate….well….LOVE. We threw a SURPRISE engagement party for two very inspirational couples – thanks to the help of their family, friends and our co-conspirators, Gerri and Mellisha. Here at espy, we have been lucky enough to see these two couples grow in love and as a result, be inspired by them as a couple and as individuals in what they have so kindly shared with us.

And celebrate we did! It was a fancy affair thanks to Notable, who created a menu specifically for this event. DJ Jon Spade brought his classic touch of cool to the atmosphere with his signature beats. And the Notable girls made sure everyone’s glasses were full!

We also officially unveiled the quotes of love that have been shared with espy as part of our project to Spread Love throughout the month of February. Big thanks to all of our Calgary contributors! It’s an honor to get to share your personal articulations of what love is to you with all of our followers, fans, clients, friends, and the community. And an even greater honor to have those words posted all over the store as constant reminders of love.

Spread Love Month is truly about reflection. The time we can spend reflecting on love is what gives us the opportunity to show, share, and spread it. Whether its taking an evening to reflect on your upcoming nuptials with your family and friends, taking the time to reflect on what love is to you and translating that into a quote, sharing something you find inspirational on Facebook, writing a love note on a heart shaped post-it, tweeting out a little love to your followers, or a simple reminder that a random act of kindness might be just the thing the recipient needs – spreading love is the thing that we are all inspired by. With Valentine’s Day upon us, February seems like the perfect month to reflect on love and turn that reflection into something tangible. You just never know who you may inspire! And for that matter, you just never know who may be planning to surprise you to celebrate that inspiration!

espy is so excited to launch the second annual #spreadloveyyc with Spread Love Month all February long! We are celebrating LOVE by sharing words and stories that have inspired us.

spread love banner

Spread Love Month at espy will include a transformation of the store, thanks to the help of some very prominent Calgarians and their personal articulations of love. espy’s front windows will be covered from top to bottom with quotes of love from local celebrities.

Social-Camilla_Di_Giuseppe-1

February is a month for espy to reiterate how, as a local business, we have been able to spread the love that is at the root of our vision. And through this initiative, inspire and be inspired by a movement to spread love individually and communally.

Pepe, whom some of you met at last year's #spreadloveyyc, is holding up 2 very special art pieces, made in honor of this year's Spread Love Month.

REFRESH your Wardrobe for the New Year!

Out with the old and in with the….already owned?

Maybe you don’t quite catch my drift. It’s a new year which always means it’s a good time for changes, resolutions, new inspiration, and starting the year off on the right foot in all aspects of life. And at espy, of course we believe that includes style! However, the New Year also usually includes a lot of holiday bills…so how do you update your look while staying on budget?

Turns out the answers are probably already hanging in your closet, you just don’t know it! Our closets are usually filled with amazing pieces that can be reborn. But those pieces also hang right next to pieces that perhaps need to disappear. And then, of course, we’ve all got our fat clothes…our skinny clothes…our sweat pants…our pajamas…our work-out wear. In other words – your own closet can be as difficult to navigate as a messy department store. Things get lost and forgotten about. And then you get into the habit of wearing the same things over and over and over again because not only can you not find anything, but you have no idea what to wear with what. So how do you get out of this perpetual closet nightmare that is contributing to the frustration of feeling like you’ve lost your style?

casual before n after

Luckily you can hire people you already know to help you – the espy stylists are amazing style consultants and experts when it comes to clothes. And your favorite espy stylists are available for Closet Interventions.

men before n after

An espy Closet Intervention is all about working with what you’ve already got. Of course your stylist will make suggestions on what you could add to your wardrobe, but the main goal is to work within your existing closet. Your stylist will be able to help you sort your wardrobe into appropriate sections based on your lifestyle and show you how to put effortless outfits together for every occasion. And the best part? You don’t have to go to the mall! It all happens in the comfort of your home and closet.

formal before n after

Start your year off with a fresh outlook and a refresher on your wardrobe. Let an espy stylist show you how stylish what you already own can be!

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays from all of us at espy!

espyholidaycard2012

We want to wish EVERYONE a very, very Merry Christmas and a safe and happy holiday!

We cannot express how grateful we are to all of our supporters, customers, clients, suppliers, friends and family. 2012 was a huge year for espy thanks to everyone who has allowed us and helped us to spread our message of love for yourself, your body, and your community.

Please take note of espy’s holiday hours:

  • Dec. 24 – espy is open 10:30am to 3pm
  • Dec. 25 to Dec. 28 – CLOSED
  • Dec. 29 – Boxing Day Sale, espy is open 9am to 6pm
  • Dec. 31 – espy is open 10:30am to 3pm
  • Jan. 1 – CLOSED

Here’s a quick recap of what the espy stylists were up to in 2012:

banner espy 2012

We kicked 2012 off with tons of new brands, new merchandise, new stylists and new styles for the new store! We fit over 8000 people in properly fitting denim. We held tarot readings; we hosted a beach party in the winter; we Spread Love with NYC artisits; we battled coupon sites! We threw a denim photo shoot party with some of our most amazingly wonderful and beautiful clientele. We celebrated European fashion. We YEEHAW’d hard in support of Special Olympics Calgary with #bikiniespy! We asked 100 women to line up outside the store in bikinis and then we dressed this charitable bunch in FREE Stampede fashion! While we styled the ladies, we also hosted a neighborhood breakfast with the help of amazing sponsors and volunteers. We became dancers as we planned and promoted a flash mob that had us dancing all over the city! The final mob joined together for a memorable day at Inglewood’s Sunfest. We threw a fashion show where the espy stylists dressed models table side. We expanded once again with our latest endeavor – the Boudoir! We now offer professional bra fittings and some of the BEST bras in the city! And then we dressed 100 naked men in $500 of FREE clothes in support of the Prostate Cancer Centre with the third annual men’s event, #nakedespy. We had burlesque performances, we raised money, we drank some beer, and then one week later we threw what you think was the sale of the year (Black Friday has NOTHING on espy’s LEGENDARY Boxing Day Sale…stay tuned for details!). And most importantly, all of these crazy events, sales, expansions, and projects have helped us to continue to style people like you and share our concept across the city.

Thank you to EVERYONE who has supported all of espy’s initiatives, projects, staff, and the store. It means so much to all of us because it enables us to continue to spread LOVE through fashion, fit, and philanthropy in the years to come.

So where does that take us for 2013?….

Television of course! Watch the video above for a little glimpse into the world of the espy experience…

Remember that espy’s LEGENDARY Boxing Day Sale happens on Saturday, December 29, 2012! Check your inbox for all the details.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS and here’s wishing you a VERY Merry Christmas!

espy’s Holiday Gift Ideas!

Christmas_presents

Christmas and holiday shoppers are out in full force! So – do you know what you’re looking for this season? The holiday season can be a tad stressful to all the Mr. and Mrs. Clause’s out there. We always want to give those we love something meaningful and unique – but it’s not always that easy to figure out what those gifts are!  Sometimes you just need a little inspiration – so here is espy’s 2012 Holiday Gift Basket:

What’s in this AMAZING basket??

1. Lenny and Eva Jewelry

  • This jewelry line is very special because it’s designed around sentiments. Quotes about life, love, faith, laughter, lessons, and dreams that sit right on your wrist. Lenny and Eva salvaged sentiments attach to earthy leather bands in various sizes. It’s a keepsake and a bracelet that never goes out of style.
2. Bjorn Borg Underwear and Socks
  • Bjorn Borg is perfect for holiday gift giving! Bright, colorful, comfortable, and…cheeky!
3. Hosiery
  • Affordable, sexy, and she will actually use it! Miss Martin micro-fibre hosiery is made by a local designer and the packaging is just perfect for the holidays.
4. Cuff links
  •  Man-ccessory! Cuff links are great keepsakes for the business men or style guys in your life. These ones from Bugatchi are stylish and interesting.
5. Little Gifties – Accessories for her
  • What girl doesn’t need a pretty floral compact for her purse? Chunky cuff bracelets and studs are affordable items for the trendsetters in your life.
6. Leg Warmers!
  • Because the 80′s were a fantastic time, and leg warmers are cute! (And practical for wintry days)
7. Man Scarf
  • ‘Cuz he gets cold too!
8. Ties
  • Classic Christmas gift – never goes out of style!
9. Recycled Fur Ear Muffs
  • Super cozy and soft for sensitive ears from Rachel F – made out of real fur that has been recycled.
10. Toque and Scarf for her
  • Instead of purchasing a matchy-matchy hat and scarf combo, pick out a combo yourself! Mix textures and pull in some interesting colors. This is a great way to personalize your gift and show you’ve put some thought in.

How can you give someone the “espy experience?”

  • You can purchase a Closet Intervention with an espy stylist for someone special who maybe needs to spend a little more time on themselves in the new year.
  • Everyone loves to pick out their own gifts! So why not purchase a gift card for the espy lover in your life?
  • If he or she has shopped in espy before, we’ve got their sizes on file! Your espy stylists can put together an entire look just for him or her – a custom styled outfit they’ll love to wear!
Happy Holiday Shopping!

How to Wear Printed Jeans

printed denim banner

Printed jeans…your first thoughts are probably: 1. how will my thighs look? 2. do they make me look like I’m wearing a couch? (my brother actually said this to me when I was wearing my floral printed pants..so from first hand experience, it is a legitimate concern) and 3. is this seriously something I can pull off?

Here’s the thing – printed jeans are definitely not for everyone. A heavy pattern on a slightly thicker leg or a shorter leg is overwhelming and not necessarily slimming. Pairing printed pants with the right outfit and appropriate accessories is certainly not the easiest task. And avoiding looking like you’re trying way too hard to look stylish in an of-the-moment-trend is a definite concern. So how exactly do you wear this season’s boldest trend?

espy stylist and assistant marketing coordinator Jackie has picked out 5 different looks with 5 different pairs of printed pants to show you the best ways to style this trend, accessorize it, and some tips for those of us who don’t have super slim and long legs like espy stylist Suneet – who has modeled all the looks!

1. Keep it Simple:

(especially when the pattern is this bold!)

We’re all swooning over these gorgeous gold foil floral skinnies from Fidelity (Sheffield Rose – $229). These jeans are not for the timid fashionistas. Not only are they crazy colorful with an anything but subtle floral print, but they are also painted gold – which means they’re shiny. These are the Queen of all printed jeans in the realm of espy. So what do you wear with denim royalty?

The key with something as bold as the rosy gold jeans is to keep it simple. Try a sheer blouse in a soft, but solid color and a dark, cropped jacket to achieve balance. Jackie has paired them with a mint green sheer blouse (RD – $39), a dark denim jacket (Fidelity – $229), and a black bootie (Wanted – $73). A solid color on top will help to emphasize the printed pant as the key piece of your outfit. Finishing the look with a fitted, darker jacket like the denim one Suneet is wearing gives a touch of sophistication and structure to such a wild print.

2. Streamlined:

(work appropriate prints)

If you’re more of a Lady than a Queen – a quieter and darker print, such as the Fidelity Ace Monte Carlo – $219, is for you. If you do have a thicker thigh, a less obvious print in a non-textured pant is the way to go. It won’t add any excess bulk or attention to places you don’t want to draw attention to. It’s much easier to keep your look streamlined and maybe a touch more professional when the pattern isn’t so bold. This is definitely casual Friday at the office appropriate.

Wearing a fainter print allows you to pull in other trends or bolder colors for a refined, less flashy look. In this look, Jackie has paired these muted teal printed pants with an ox blood blazer (RD – $57), which is the color of the season for men and women, and a shimmery champagne blouse with looped pleats (RD – $39). The pleats add a layer of texture to the outfit, while the blazer pops some color and gives some shape around the waist.

 3. Cute and Cozy:

(how to be stylish and stay warm on your weekend getaway)

If you’re spending the weekend in Banff or you have a bit more of a casual style – this the look for you. These jewel tone teal velveteen printed pants are heaven to wear (Fidelity Ace Velveteen Monte Carlo – $229). As cozy and comfy as a cord but with a lot more impact.

Jackie has styled them with a long grey sweater (RD – $49) and a killer leather jacket (Bano eMee $349). Wearing something a little longer and treating your printed pants like you would a legging is a great way to get around the thicker thigh issue. Add a long pendant necklace (Darlings of Denmark – $39) for the illusion of extra length and a fitted jacket, like the leather one Suneet is wearing, to avoid losing any shape with an over-sized sweater. Accessorize with a a cute headband (Delux Accessories – $23) and booties.

4. What to Wear on Date #3

(because you know you won’t know what to wear…)

Here’s another bold print! Let’s call these the Princess pants (Mavi Serena White Floral – $119). They are white with a floral pattern on top – very scary! Stay away from these if you have a thicker thigh unless you are going to wear them with a tunic or an over-sized sweater. The pale background of these pants makes the flowers really stand out. These will draw a lot of attention – so you’ve gotta be bold to pull them off! However, if you’re brave enough, these are definitely show-stoppers.

Here Jackie has paired a baby pink sweater (RD – $47) with silver foil inlaid and a grey suede coat (GSUS – $419) with an amazing collar. The look is made up of basics that have great textures to give the outfit as a whole some richness and depth. Jackie has paired a feminine pendant necklace as the finishing touch to a date-worthy look.

5. Pretty and Preppy

(for the girly or the nerdy)

Ideal for class, a lunch date, or shopping with your girlfriends – this is the sweetest way to wear printed pants like these floral Mavi’s (Mavi Alexa Grey Floral – $119)! The darkness of the pattern which uses shades of black and grey neutralizes the impact of the print, making them a little more wearable. The neutral shades of this floral print are a good option in a printed pant if you like to wear a lot of color.

Jackie has paired this final print with a creamy lace tee (Kersh – $83) and a bright red cardigan (Kersh – $69). The cardi gives the look a touch of nerd chic and the lace keeps it feminine and fresh. Adorable!

Feeling a little more confident about wearing a print on the bottom?? Just remember to keep your personal style involved in your outfit. Don’t lose yourself in a trend! If you’re preppy, you can still be preppy and wear a printed pant. It’s all about balancing the boldness of the print and wearing the silhouettes that suit your shape the best. So don’t take my brother’s word for it – prints are no longer just for the couch.
